Summary: A blend of fact and fiction, the story of Laika the dog, Earth's first space traveler, is told from three different viewpoints - Korolev, a Soviet engineer; Yelena, the technician responsible for Laika; and Laika herself.
Personal Reaction: Okay before this semester, I couldn't remember if I had ever heard of Laika before. I knew about the monkeys sent into space, but didn't know that they had sent dogs up during the space race. So while I suspected that this book wasn't going to end well, I wasn't aware prior to reading this book that the dog was going to pass away. I'm a dog person, so I totally related to Yelena's distress that her dog was getting shot into space, alone, panicked, and suffering. This book definitely could be used as a supplement for learning about the space race history, or could be used as a writing prompt for students asking "What would you do?" in this scenario.
